FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

beachtobrewerySaturday May 10, 2008 was the 5th Annual Surfrider Foundation Beach to Brewery Beer and Music Festival. A sell-out crowd of over 2,500 thirsty beer-lovers crowded next to the Karl Strauss Main Brewery in Pacific Beach for an afternoon of local music, beer, and supporting a good cause—the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. In it’s fifth year, Beach to Brewery has become somewhat of a PB tradition.  This year, the much-anticipated line-up included local favorites Louis XIV, supported by The Shy’s, Stranger, and Hotel St. George. The event started at 2pm, and by 1pm there was already a line to get in.

Beach To Brewery Hotel St. George kicked off the music and lead singer Matt Binder later commented  “We had a really great time. Definitely the most fun show any of us has ever played. Karl Strauss certainly knows how to throw a party.”  By the end of the day over 11,500 beers were poured—totaling 72 kegs. The Windansea Wheat Hefeweizen and Double I.I.PA. were among the crowd favorites, as well as the small batch dry-hopped firkins. Beach to Brewery was also a chance for people to learn more about the brewing process—over 800 people took a tour of the brewery and sampled beer right out of a bright tank.  This year we placed a renewed focus on our commitment to the environment. All 110 volunteers wore 100% organic shirts and with the help of Hands On and Waste Management, we were able to divert 50% of our waste to recycling. Overall, the event was a success and Karl Strauss was able to donate $17,000 to the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.  For pictures from the event click here.

In addition to supporting the San Diego Chapter of Surfrider, Karl Strauss has been a long time supporter of many student organizations at the University of California San Diego.  Over the last year, Karl Strauss has donated or discounted over 375 cases of beer to support fundraising efforts for various graduate student organizations, including the UCSD Grad Student Association, UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering, UCSD Scripps Institute of Oceanography, UCSD Computer Science, UCSD Chemists, and UCSD Alumni Association. In recognition of Karl Strauss’ ongoing commitment to UCSD, the company was selected as this year's recipient of the Community Leader Award for the First Annual Graduate Student Community Awards organized by the Graduate Student Association.  More than 75 graduate students, as well as Chancellor Fox and Dean Barrett attended the awards ceremony.

If all this talk of supporting good causes has left you thirsty—then look no further than this month’s cask nights.  The monthly cask nights have been such a success at the Brewery Restaurants that starting in June, the Universal CityWalk location will be launching a summer cask program as well.  This month’s cask will feature a bold and spicy Rye I.P.A.  A light amber colored ale brewed with plenty of Marris Otter and Rye malt for a full-bodied and robust flavor.  The beer’s unique spice character comes not only from the Rye, but also from the imported Phoenix hops used to dry-hop the casks.   Stop by for a pint off the traditional beer engine—pints are $3.50 until the cask runs out, so get there early!
